Collaboration Tools For Virtual Teams

Collaboration tools support both participation and collaboration. They benefit organizations by not only collecting corporate intelligence, but also make employees feel more part of a democratic society.

They all add up to participation and collaboration. Collaboration tools are also the next generation for many existing applications. Instead of client-server, desktop based they are becoming web based, complemented by offline.

Collaboration Tools

Collaboration tools start at the destop. Microsoft Windows Vista was designed to support collaboration, and simpler ways to work together. Other simple collaboration tools include:

  • Blogs
  • Wikis
  • Widgets
  • Video sharing
  • RSS

Using Collaboration Technologies

Collaboration technologies are designed to enable and encourage virtual project teams to share ideas, collate their project tasks in a central repositoriy, solve problems and share ideas.

On many occassions, the reverse happens. If the communication technology does not work as planned - project teams fail to perform.

Successful collaboration requires:

  1. Reliable Technology
  2. Easy to use portal design
  3. Adequate education on using the portal
  4. Separation of formal project communication and informal 'water-cooler' collaboration
  5. A formal framework for communication, including an ongoing improvement loop
  6. Real time - multiple location user access security

Overall, successful collaboration tools fit into security, compliance and rules of conduct.
