Sling Media Connecting Mobiles & Televisions

Sling Media

Sling Media provides a software client for Windows Mobile PDAs and smartphones in the USA and from April 2007, the UK.

Outside these countries, only a 30-day trial period is available.

SlingPlayer Mobile works with Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC and Smartphones devices.

If you own a smartphone built on Windows Mobile 6, you will need to wait until the next version of SlingPlayer comes out.

How SlingPlayer Mobile Works

  1. Attach a Slingbox device to your television
  2. Load the SlingPlayer client to your smartphone
  3. 'Placeshift' cable, satellite, or digital video recorder [DVR] content to wherever they are in the world through a wireless broadband - 3G cellular or Wi-Fi - Internet connection.

With DVR you can watch recorded shows, pause and rewind live TV or queue new recordings from your smartphone.

Components

SlingPlayer Software - 19.99 GBP [29 Euros].

SlingBoxes [3 models]:

    • Slingbox PRO ($250)
    • Slingbox AV ($180)
    • Slingbox Tuner ($180)

Each type of Slingbox is used for a specific home entertainment center setup.

To date, only Windows Mobile devices have been certified, but the mobile client does also work with other smartphones; where they meet Sling Media's minimum device requirements.

Smartphone Requirements

SlingMedia Smartphone requirements include:

  • Windows Mobile 5.0 for smartphone platform
  • CPU of 144 MHz or higher
  • Minimum 16 gray scale display (65,536 colors is recommended)
  • Audio support plus speakers or headphones (stereo support suggested)
  • Network downloads speeds of 120 Kbps or greater,
  • 900 KB of available memory to store the application
  • 4 MB of Program Memory to run SlingMedia

Upcoming SlingMedia Launches

Coming out in 2007 are SlingPlayer Mobile clients for the Symbian platform, for both S60 (mostly Nokia) and UIQ (mostly Sony Ericsson) smartphone models.

A beta program for a Palm OS SlingPlayer Mobile client is in progress and wireless clients for RIM's BlackBerry devices, BREW and J2ME-based cell phones are in the pipeline.
