Mobile Entertainment 2007


Since 2004, content has been the big revenue earner for mobile network operators and has seen a plethora of mobile content providers burst onto the market.

In a survey in 2006, the top three content downloads were:

  1. Business
  2. Professional
  3. Entertainment

Today, Smartphone users want entertainment rather than work-related applications, and they also want more custom feature options.

Entertainment now represents 17 percent of the market, with business applications falling to 16 percent [Source: Handango Yardstick Trend Report].

According to Handango CEO Bill Stone, this change in position reflects the consumer use of Smartphones, previously the domain of business users.

One a handset gains mass adoption, the user segment rapidly expands, and a call for more personal, customisable features. Consumer users want on thier Smartphones, exactly what they have on their PC's.

RIM [Research in Motion] BlackBerry Pearl holds the top spot, being the most popular device for mobile content in 2007, both in terms of revenue and units sold

Top Blackberry Apps

Business and professional applications ranked highest in overall sales, with the top 10 applications including a mix of:

  • Games - such as Sudoku and poker
  • Communications software - ringtones and instant messenger
  • Travel applications

Users have become known as 'Crackberry' Addicts

 

Top 10 BlackBerry Applications

  1. Ringtone Megaplex (ringtone library)
  2. Sudoku (puzzle game)
  3. Colour Your Trackball (trackball customizer)
  4. IM+ (instant messenger)
  5. Ascendo DataVault (password manager)
  6. WorldMate Live Gold Membership (travel assistant)
  7. Aces Texas Hold’Em – No Limit (poker game)
  8. IM+ for Skype (instant messenger)
  9. SplashID for BlackBerry (information security)
  10. Crackberry Ringtones Deluxe (ringtone library)

 

Top Windows Mobile Applications

Entertainment also tops the sales chart for Windows Mobile Application users, representing 36 percent of sales. Streaming media applications appear in the top 10 best-sellers list, however Business and professional applications had to settle for just 12 percent.

 

Top Palm Mobile Applications

Palm released few devices in 2007, but its operating system continues to gain loyal demand for content.

The best selling Palm applications were business and productivity, including Outlook synchronization and a personal information manager. On the entertainment side, only a ringtone player fell into the top 10.

 

Top Symbian Mobile Applications

Symbian platform device users tend to focus on productivity and utilities applications, such as a time manager, weather monitor and travel assistant.
