Teleco Strategies
As air time becomes more and more commoditised to contribute almost
zero value to ARPU, Telcos are not only looking for ways to build
revenue, but also to differentiate themselves from their competitors.
Strategies employed to date have concentrated on:
- Device Supply
- Content Supply
- Applications
As IP convergence provides for significant diversity in how content
and applications are deployed by the end user, Telcos are also striving
for diversity in bundling of services; commonly referred to as Blended
Applications.
Blended applications are designed to help telecom operators differentiate
themselves by combining otherwise distinct IP-based services. Applications
often seen today are services such as adding VOIP Service Chat Windows
to e-commerce Websites or adding messaging to TV, as seen in reality
shows.
Blending applications does raise certain technical issues; such
as IMS Service Capability Interaction challenges created by service
and feature interaction in both IMS and non-IMS contexts.
As each layer of IP infrastructure is implemented, more capability
is deployed and more interaction issues arise.
