Telstra - Australia

Telstra is Australia’s largest telecommunications provider offering a full range of telecom services throughout Australia including:

  • Basic access services to most homes and businesses
  • Local and long-distance telephone call services
  • Mobile and Internet services

Recent operational realignments and Telstra’s revised strategic plans, along with an overview of its Next Generation Network development are included for 2007.

Strategic Overview

Telstra is one of the strongest performers in the Telecoms industry in terms of both revenue growth and profit, in spite of not yet tapping into new revenue streams such as triple play, IPTV and VoIP.

It is seen as one of the best-placed telcos in the world to profit from the new developments in digital media.

Industry experts predict a substantial and rapid shift from Telstra, even possibly a split up of the company, and float of different elements of the company - the parts being worth more than the whole entity.

Competitor Insight

The key strategic issues facing Telstra include:

  • Fight for market share in the Australian broadband market with the advent of ULL/DSL operators
  • Wholesale migration by AAPT away from Telstra to Powertel
  • Likely entry into the broadband space of Vodafone plc.

Regulatory Issues

The regulatory issues facing Telstra include:

  • FTTN delays
  • ULL Pricing
  • Regulations surrounding fixed line wholesale services
  • PSTN Interconnects
  • Local call services

Offshore

Telstra’s efforts over the years to establish a presence overseas. After successful engineering projects by its predecessor, OTC, mainly in Indo-China, these efforts progressed through mainly unsuccessful attempts to establish operations in Europe, USA and Asia.

The company’s major recent offshore investments include:

  • Telstra Clear in NZ
  • Mobile businesses in Hong Kong
  • Reach JV with PCCW
  • In September 2006, Telstra paid $329 million on to gain a 51% controlling stake in Chinese website SouFun.com.

In November 2006 Telstra identified India and Malaysia as expansion markets for its operations and has launched negotiations in both countries to achieve a level playing field with existing players.
