Virtual Desktops For Cincinnati Bell

As we have seen virtualization transform the server environment, VDI now extends virtualization to the desktop.

In one recent project, Cincinnati Bell saw desktop virtualization as a "Cost Saver And Profit Maker". The project will combine VMWare Infrastructure 3 with Sun VDI [Virtual Desktop Infrastructure] to adopt desktop virtualization as a replacement technology, a better option than upgrading its existing desktops.

Not only does virtualization provide Cincinnati Bell internally with an internal solution for its 3300 workers, it is also seen as a potential new revenue stream.

Over 2008 Q2 and Q3 Cincinnati Bell will convert 750 users using the virtualization solution. This includes call center, help desk, and service desk employees.

Currently, users are on Windows 2000 PC leased assets, now approaching "the end of life support." Moving to thin clients are a less-expensive alternative to upgrading.

The solution will support a range of desktop OS, including Windows XP, Windows 2000 or Windows 2003.

VMware also offers its own virtual desktop infrastructure

Virtualization is only just beginning to have an impact on enterprise server farms. As a technology, it is lterally remaking IT operations from the ground up, drastically altering the way both hardware and software systems are acquired, deployed, utilized and retired.
